Patch Set 1:

This is an attempt to make a more or less clean baseline for further fixes as the current state of affairs is rather poor - hence this is a bulk commit. It would be a lot of work to break it up into smaller pieces so I apologize for that in advance.

Not only the tests but the charm itself needs more work in my opinion so I vote for making step-by-step changes after this one.
